So the US is trying to lift a ban they currently have on homosexuals fighting in the armed forces. It is potentially controversial because for some reason preferring men over women means you can’t fight? Heck, somebody better tell them about these things called women because I imagine a lot of them like men too. Except lesbians who don’t, but are banned from serving anyway.
You get the idea, I have no idea what would have inspired this crazed and discriminatory policy in the first place. Gay rights activists are loving this new proposal, it marks a significant milestone in gay rights and social progress in the USA. One of my favourite quotes about the topic, which I would cite but I have no recollection of where it comes from, says: “My country gave me 3 medals for killing a man, then dishonourably discharged me for loving one.” (That was from memory so it might be slightly inaccurate. If you can find the real quote can you let me know so I can correct it.)
Of course the idea could still be beaten down and failed, and although I don’t see that sexual orientation has anything to do with anything other than sexual/social situations, I think that the idea should fail.
The US army has performed illegal operations, it does more damage to areas than it does good and the servicemen are drawn from otherwise futureless and uneducated areas. I’m not opposed to military operations in general, the Australian Army for instance does mostly rebuilding and although we are still in the Gulf illegally at least we are trying to clean up some of the mess that Bush commanded. The American forces are a different case.
Wars are extremely dangerous, even with full military training I would not consider it a safe job to go into a place where you know people are trying their hardest to kill you. Wars can seriously traumatize people and it is hard to even comprehend the horror that is bloody shell shock in a fight. I’ve never been there so I’m not going to do the injustice of pretending I understand it, but from accounts I’ve heard it is clearly something horrific.
At the moment in the US if you don’t want to become a legal murderer, undergo the horror of shock and put your own life at risk then you just have to say you are gay and you get out of it. Now there is no way they can actually prove if you are gay or not, there is no way anyone can tell your sexual orientation without careful scientific tests, unless of course you tell them. So tell them you’re gay and as easily as that you can go back to the comfortable safe life you already enjoy, far from the violent chaos of the Gulf or any other war that will occur.
Yes, the current policy is highly discriminatory but I’m happy to volunteer for that discrimination if by some stupid policy I can then get out of war. I’m sure that other people feel the same, and I suspect that until now homosexuals, actual ones and liars, have been laughing all the way home from the recruitment centre.
Of course I’m not actually gay and I’m not at all American so I have no real authority in making this post. I just thought I’d put my view out there.
**Before anyone gets offended unnecessarily I think I might just clear up my intentions for the sentence "Heck, somebody better tell them about these things called women because I imagine a lot of them like men too." I'm trying to highlight the poor gender politics of the US military as evident by discriminatory sex based policies such as the anti-homosexual one discussed in this post.
I mean nothing sexist and certainly do not believe women to be "things" or in any way less valuable than any male.
Sorry if I have unintentionally offended with this sentence.
If I've offended you because of my opinions of the US military then you can say so but that is my opinion expressed in the post so you won't get an apology there.
